The WordPress blog platform now accepts bitcoin for hosting costs via BitPay. WordPress hosts Brain Windows and many of the world’s biggest and best blogs (The New York Times, CNN, Reuters, Mashable, NBC Sports, GigaOm, TechCrunch, ELLE Girl, RealClearPolitics, TED).
This is another big step forward for the legitimacy of this eCurrency system. It is a sign that it is expanding out of Ponzi scams and grey markets (like gambling and online poker), into serious e-commerce. The European Union is also starting to take notice, probably due to Bitcoin’s near perfect utility for international capital flight if the Euro crumbles. They should take notice, because what bitcoin does do, secure triple-entry crowd accounting, instant transfers of wealth anywhere in the world with no fees, it does extremely well.
With all this attention, bitcoins have continued to appreciate in value, after a violent bubble and crash in 2011. In response to WordPress’s announcement, Brain Windows is adding a donate bitcoins button to the sidebar. If you want to support hosting costs or encourage new content production, send some coins! If you want to acquire bitcoins, the best methods are LocalBitcoins for safe cash purchases, BitInstant for small online acquisitions, BitcoinsDirect for large acquisitions, and Mt.Gox for trading. For Christmas gifts, the physical coins from Casascius are beautiful.
